In 2001, I became superintendent of a school district in Alabama. On my first day on the job, I was surprised to learn that we had two applicants for a vacant principal position. On that day, we made a pledge to develop a program to increase the leadership capacity in our district. We called the program the “Aspiring Administrator Academy.” The objective of the program was to develop potential leaders to become leaders and prepare them for future administrative positions in the district. The AAA program fulfilled our original objective to increase the number of applicants for leadership positions in our district. When I left the district 10 years later, we had 64 applicants for a vacant position. But, the residual effect of the program was a change in attitude toward the value of leaders and leadership in the district. Whether participants in the program became administrators or not, they learned leadership skills that helped them become better leaders in their classrooms, schools, churches, communities, and organizations.
